Trimester Two, Blog Eight (due 2/8 at midnight)

Did you know that nearly every day is a holiday dedicated to one person/item/event or another? Of course, we’re all aware of major holidays such as Valentine’s Day (which, to a cynical mind, is Hallmark’s way of fleecing American saps), but did you know that you just missed Bubble Wrap Appreciation on January 26? On a more serious note, the United Kingdom celebrates Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27.

If you could propose a new holiday, what would you propose? Why do you believe that this holiday deserves consideration? How would people celebrate this holiday? Obviously, you can choose to take this down a funny or a serious road. Please remember that it’s okay to incorporate humor, but also remember to be tasteful and to remain inoffensive. You can be funny without “crossing the line.” You will not receive credit for holidays that your audience (Miss Stump) deems “over the top.” It is also completely acceptable to propose a more serious suggestion.

If I were to propose a new holiday I would definitely create a National Physical Fitness Day. I believe this holiday deserves recognition because not enough Americans are participating in the recommended amount of vigorous activity. If this day were to be implemented then people would simply celebrate by playing fun sports and by doing entertaining exercises, such as dancing or rollerblading. Not only would this day help Americans to see that they can energize their workouts, but it would also decrease the obesity rate.

The new holiday I wish to propose is Benjamin Franklin Day. On this day we would all remember the things that Ben did to further our country. Some of these include harnessing electricity and giving us his thirteen virtues. Also on this day we would all wear awesome old person glasses and knickers. At some point during the day everyone in the country would stop working for one hour to honor Franklin's implementing daylight savings time.

If I had to make a new holiday, I would create a day just to honor Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa died not long after Princess Diana died, so many her life was not celebrated like it should have been. She did so much for so many people; she showed the love of Jesus in the smallest ways, but it had a huge effect. I just think that a way that people could celebrate this holiday is do something for the greater good, like volunteering at a homeless shelter or something like that. Or it could be as simple as reaching out to someone in need at school. She should be celebrated and remembered for all she did.

I would have no limits day as a holiday once every year. This holiday would make it so that there are no age, height, or experience limits on that day. So if a kid wants to ride a roller coaster and he isnt tall enough then it doesn't matter he can ride it anyways. If someone wants to drive 100 mph down st. road 19 they can and will not get pulled over. This day could in fact become dangerous for all that are involved in such acts so there would be a disclaimer on every calendar that says be limitless at your own risk.

Of course a day that should be recognized in the world is July 18- or what I like to call: Dark Knight Day. This day would be set to celebrate the monumental achievement of the hit film, The Dark Knight. On this day, everyone would stay home and watch The Dark Knight continuously while discussing the film's impact on their lives with their friends. I personally already celebrate this holiday, and I feel the rest of the world should join in.

If I could propose a new holiday to celebrate on a yearly basis I would propose National MLA Day. In celebration of this glorious formatting of document, who would not want to celebrate? The date of course would be the Monday after the national conference meeting of the Committee of MLA. Is there really any question to why people should celebrate this holiday? MLA formatting has impacted a nation in many ways because now people know how to format a paper! Also this past year the Committee of MLA passed the amendment to remove underlining and to replace it with italicizing. There was also discussion and a vote taken on whether documents should be sent in .doc or .docx format. With such an influence on society it could even be recommended to have an MLA week dedicated to this formatting phenomenon. To celebrate people would not use the italicization key and would use MLA format for all the documents they produce. There are so many great ideas that the Committee of MLA would have to celebrate this great holiday. A sufficient amount of money has already been put into a floral/landscaping presentation placed outside the White House to show the impact of this format.
