Trimester Two, Blog Nine
Reflect upon Trimester Two, and decide how you’ve grown as a reader and/or writer this trimester. Provide specific examples. Additionally, state the specific areas in which you would like to see more growth during your LAST trimester of AP English. This will help me plan some of the activities that we do.

During the second trimester I feel that I have become a better reader. One time I saw this was while reading Benito Cereno. Even though this book was sometimes difficult to understand, I still was able to look past the different wording and understand what Melville wanted readers to see. In the third trimester I hope to grow in more in my reading and comprehension skills to better assist me in understanding works by authors such as Melville.
Personally, I think I've grown in my writing skills. On the last paper, I scored higher than I have on other papers. I took a lot of time to edit and really research my subject and thus, it made a better paper. I really would like to improve on my reading skills, like Isaac also said. Melville was confusing, but "Benito Cereno" won't be the only book I will come upon that will be hard to comprehend. He wrote with a lot of details and unusual vocabulary. I would like to be able to comprehend his kind of language better.
This trimester I felt that I was able to improve on my writing skills. Not only did the class work on presenting arguments, but we also observed essays and were able to disect their pros and cons.Within the duration of this trimester both Hamlet and Benito Cereno helped me to become a better reader. Both books would not necessarily be a fond choice of mine, but they aided in increasing my comprehension level, and in my vocabulary contexts. The class discussions were also beneficiary to my advancement in thinking. For the last trimester I would like to be able to develop better conventions even though I dread them. I would also like to gain more knowledge based on different works of literature.
When I look at the second trimester I can honestly say that I have seen growth in my reading and writing skills. I think that as I read “Benito Cereno” I found myself annotating the whole novella. This led me to enjoy reading the somewhat boring book because I understood the writing better. With this example I found out that this showed that I had progressed in my skills because it has seemed like forever since I had been able to make it through an entire book without having to skim or read Sparknotes. When I reflect on how I thought I was doing with my writing, I hit a difficult point of understanding. On my past paper I received a somewhat disappointing grade which leads me to wonder if I truly improved. As we come into the final trimester, I hope to transfer my improvement in reading and extending it onto the written word. This could possibly be a difficult transition, but I felt that I started the year being a better writer than reader and have now progressed the other way. I would rather be average on both sides.
Over the last trimester I believe that I have grown the most as a writer. Although we have done multiple reading activities such as Benito Cereno, I have still found myself progressing the most as a writer. The last paper that we wrote I spent more time editing and revising, and almost found this process enjoyable. The feeling of enjoyment was only temporary, and nothing to get excited over Miss Stump. An area where improvement may be needed is reading. Often I find myself skimming over text and not comprehending the true meaning of the story. Although Benito Cereno may have been hard reading, I feel as if I had more practice with similar text it would help me with the AP test.
As the second trimester comes to an end and I look back upon my reading and writing skills at what they are now compared to what they were at the start of the trimester I do indeed see improvement. The problem/solution paper let me express my writing in its new and improved form. I enjoyed that essay it was an easy paper to write and was interesting to me. My reading skills have have definately changed over the past tri. Reading Hamlet was difficult but helped the improvement of reading. Benito Cereno was one of the most challenging books I have read; well I haven't read that many books in the first place but anyways. It was hard to define Melville's language throughout but it improved my skills. Overall it has be a good trimester of AP English.
I would have to say that my writing is the skill I have most improved on in the last trimester. Although I have along way to go, I feel that my papers and essay written recently have definitely been an improvement from those I wrote at the beginning of the year.
I would really like to see my reading skills improve in the last trimester of the class. Techniques such as annotating and "fondling the details" still do not come naturally to me, and I hope that they will before I enter college.
