Trimester Two: Blog #4 (due 1/11 at midnight)

Take a look around at the advertisements that you see in the communities of Nappanee and Wakarusa. Which company or business, in your opinion, could use a new marketing strategy? Using what you’ve learned in AP English about thinking rhetorically in regards to advertising, provide some recommendations for the business or company you’ve chosen. Consider the audience, purpose, and author of the advertisement. Also, don’t forget to think about whether the new advertisement should appeal to an audience’s pathos, ethos, or logos.

I also encourage you to comment on others’ recommendations.

I think one business that could use a new strategy is the McDonald's in Wakarusa. They have been using the same marketing techniques for decades and those are getting old. New advertisements are needed especially because the nation is moving towards healthier foods, and McDonald's is not necessarily known for healthy food. Something the restaurant could do is to emphasize their salads and healthy sides more. The author would be McDonald's, the audience is fast food customers, and the purpose is to sell more healthy meals. The rationale would be logos. Ads would appeal to consumer's logic.

I believe that Cook's Pizza in downtown Wakarusa could incorporate new marketing strategies. The business does not advertise much, so perhaps just creating a billboard or some kind of advertisement could increase their sales. I think that a billboard along S.R. 19 would draw in more customers, since there are not many food options in Wakarusa. The billboard could many appeal to adults who want to have a leisurely time in a comfortable atmosphere. The purpose of creating such means of information would be to increase sales, and finally the author would be Cook's Pizza, or sponors who would finance their ads. To promote the relaxed environment of the restraunt I believe that their ads should appeal to ethos, or the character of the place itself.

I agree with Lindsey, and believe that Cook’s Pizza in downtown Wakarusa could definitely use a new marketing strategy. For years Cook’s has been a hot spot for their pizza and ice cream, yet they rarely advertise. With Wakarusa being such a small town many people do not know where Cook’s Pizza is, let alone downtown Wakarusa! By placing ads in papers as well as Billboards I feel as if it would really help to increase their business. Billboards could be placed both north and south of Wakarusa. Places like Elkhart and Nappanee would be great locations for such type of billboards. The billboards could feature a picture of their tasty pizza, which would appeal to pathos because it would instantly make someone crave a slice of Cook’s delectable pizza. The audience would mostly be local traffic and hungry individuals. Finally the sponsor would be Cook’s Pizza or Doctor Abel because he sponsors pretty much everything in the small town of Wakarusa.

As we look at this nation in a time of an economic crisis, the people have begun to slow down with the times. In Nappanee and Wakarusa, the community has had to embrace the pace and a great change of the standards of living. In advertising manners, business owners have had to make cuts and as a member of the yearbook staff, we see these losses because businesses have stopped their advertising completely. What businesses need to start doing in the world we are living in today is go simple.

For the past couple of years businesses have tried to become trendy and live with the times. Spending money on plasma televisions and expensive decorations to try to jive with the younger generation is no longer the best marketing strategy. The people want things to be simple and homey. Businesses that are too high tech appear to be out of the league of most individuals who are middle class now. Nappanee and Wakarusa both have stayed classy over the years in their marketing strategy. Businesses that are going to need to work on their marketing strategies are the ones who are focusing on the older generations.

Businesses like the bakery that mainly focused on older generations have gone out of business because they lose their clientele in a surprisingly quick rate. These business need to focus on younger generations because younger people buy things when they see someone else buy things. Places like Taco Bell and McDonalds make it big because young people can hang out in a nice environment and enjoy and cheap but good meal. What businesses have to do is provide a reliable service at a great price.

Providing these excellent opportunities will deal with pathos, ethos, and logos in this area. People have been so changed by the society we live in that they are moved by the simplest change. Change in ownership in Nappanee and Wakarusa can make a giant difference in whether people go somewhere. When you look at this small community there is no big difference that needs to be made in marketing strategies. If we went completely simple like we see the Pepsi Company doing with their design, the people would lose their interest. Nappanee. Wakarusa. Two cities that have lasted through a lot and though a few little tweaks could be made, businesses in these areas do fine on their marketing strategy. They do this by staying simple and if they stay this way they will always do perfectly fine.

Loucks and Weaver CPA and Associates needs to advertise better than it does now. I have been telling my dad for years that he needs to purchase the space of a billboard or produce a T.V. commercial to attract new clients. The current advertising scheme for Loucks and Weaver is putting an ad in the new paper and when NorthWood is the game of the week on T.V. 46 he purchases a spot that sponsers the starting line ups but that is it. It is a very small group that he advertises to. By producing a T.V. commercial and airing it on local stations it will be seen by a larger group of people. This appeals to the audience's logos. It is logical and people think of going to a hometown trusted business.

One business that could use a new spin is Pizza Hut in Nappanee. I recently went there and discovered that they have a lot of new items on their menu, including wings, sandwiches, pastas, etc. I think that one way that Pizza Hut could expand their business is by delivering their food. There is no place in Nappanee or near Nappanee that delivers their pizza. If P.Hut decided to do this, their business would sky-rocket. Also, they should advertise that they have many new items on their menu.

I would also have to agree with Lindsey about Cook's. They could also use some new advertisement and maybe with more business, they could upgrade their location. But moving their business would be bittersweet.

A business in the Michiana area that could use a few tips in advertising is Overhead door. For years, Overhead door has been displaying commercials featuring a loon repairman coming to fix garage doors for unsuspecting customers.

Although these commercials make me smile, they don't make me laugh in a good way. I laugh because I think the commercials are the stupidest things I've ever seen and the people responsible for making them are either high or retarded. This isn't the message businesses usually want to get across to their potential customers.

My suggestion is to aim the commercials at their actual audience, adults. They can still be humorous and even a tad corny, as long as they don't go over the line. They should appeal to logos, convincing people that buying their service is the logical thing to do.
