Trimester One: Blog Six (due 10/12 by midnight)

Think about the critical reading skills you’ve practiced this year (or should have been practicing) throughout the poetry unit and throughout The Awakening unit. Many of you indicated—via the last blog’s goals—that you wish to further develop these skills by annotating, fondling the details, etc. How have those skills helped you read through the research materials you’ve found? Do you find yourself reading the research materials differently? Have you researched for this essay differently than you have for other essays after hearing the research tips that Mrs. Bontrager presented? Reflect upon your growth as a reader and as a researcher.

Finally, let the rest of the class know what topic you're researching! Feel free to comment on others' topics.

When I am researching I find myself looking at the website or author of the piece first to see if it is a reliable source. The information that I am using is more in depth and is more relevant to my topic. By looking at the reliability of my surces more it makes it easier to site my sources in my bibliography. The details are becoming important in my research. My topic is how rap music effects the youth of America mostly in the negative ways but also in a positive way.

During my research process I have begun to take thorough notes that I feel will be helpful when writing my paper. I am using several psychology books that I have found very helpful. With past research papers, I have always checked with my teachers to make sure my site it credible, however, now that it is my senior year I feel as though I am intelligent enough to figure that out on my own. Also, I will be making note cards to take notes on. Each source I use will have a special notecard that will be assigned a special number, and every bit of information I use will tell me which source I got it from. I find that to be very helpful, and it keeps me organized. O and my topic is "What makes us Moral? (good vs. evil)"

Obviously by this point in high school I have learned to use a relable source. Mrs. B's speech or presentation helped me to learn not only to use a reliable source, but one with good quality. In this project I like that we can use graphs, as compared to most MLA papers. I think with inspire I can find more quality sources. I do, however, still find the works cited page rather frustrating along with the rest of my morning which consisted of running late, forgetting my lunch and gas money, and having my side view mirror ripped off by my garage. Hope your day is better than mine glad I could vent on here, I love you guys. Ok well most of you. Just kidding your all good kids and will be great success in life.

The main way that I am reading the research materials differently is fondling the details. I am paying more attention to everything rather than just the main highlights. Mrs. Bontrager's presentation helped me realize that I need to balance my research by using more books instead of just internet sources. I also learned that magazines can be just as valuable too. The topic that I have chose to research is steroids and its horrible effects on the human body.

When I look for information online I now go through sites and read them. I don't just google a topic and pick the first two sites that pop up in the search. Plus, I'm using INSPIRE for the first time ever for a research paper. I'm also really studying details more and more in the information I read. Mrs. Bontrager's presentation helped me the most with using INSPIRE and not unreliable websites.

I will be writing about the economy- how we got to where we are and how we can solve the problem.

I have always enjoyed researching especially through books. However, I have begun to expand my researching abilities. I am no longer afraid of the web because I now know how to discover whether an internet source is reliable or not. Although the evidence I am using is located mostly in text, I plan on deriving information from Inspire and CQ researcher as well. This is because I now understand how to use them and benefit from their use.
I am researching how Edgar Allan Poe became a prominent literary figure.

As I have been working on this research paper, I have not yet seen a difference as I read through research materials. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but when I start my research I simply look for a title that is similar to the topic I wish to cover. If there is ample information covered in the source, then I find that as a reliable source. Maybe with more time working on this project and with more sources, I will be reading the sources more thoroughly to find the information I need to complete my argument.

When initially working on papers in the past, I think most individuals went directly to Google and searched for the topic of choice. On this paper, following Mrs. Bontrager’s presentation, I feel that many classmates along with me will go away from the traditional use of the internet and will use more reliable sources such as books, magazines, and CQ researcher type resources. I feel as I continue working on this paper, I will find myself being more grown than I can tell. In my paper there will be some kind of change reflecting my growth as a researcher, but I personally cannot tell. Hopefully in the future I will be able to reflect on the differences I can see myself until this time I will have to say that I am sure something has happened, but I don’t know what it is exactly.

For my topic I will be discussing the topic of “good” teachers and the way salaries for educators should be different then the way of traditional jobs. I feel like my topic does not compare to some great topics that are being covered. Whether about drugs, rap, gang violence or less abusive topics such as the economy and Edgar Poe, I feel like the first period class has put together the best and greatest topics of all the classes. Our topics are not near as boring and we do not have feministic jokes as the ones posted by poodle on our Blog. First period is the best class!!!

Though I have just begun reasearching my topic, I feel more justified in my research. Rather than simply googling all the information and creating a foundation of research from random websites, I have learned to use creditable resources such as Inspire and CQ Researcher. Mrs. Bontrager's presentation was very informational and helpful, and provided me with a better idea of how to go about researching.

For my paper, I am researching poverty in Thailand, how it leads to the child sex trade, and the psychological effects of sexually abused children.

As we have covered many different stories in many different styles of writing, I believe that we all have developed better senses to what sorts of information are more important than others. Because of the development of these skills, I have been focused on pointing out some of the more applicable material I can use in my paper, while noting facts and other details in the research that could also be used in certain situations. While I have been researching for my topic, I have been trying to spread out my sources between books, the internet, and magazines, as well as trying to find newer versus older material.

My topic is over how bad habits and neglect to health can cause skin cancer. Some of the topics being mentioned here sound pretty interesting. One is even kind of scary... not pointing any fingers... tori....

Previously when researching a topic I would collect an abundant supply of resources, to many in fact, and much of my time that would normally be spent sifting through the rift raft of my sources rather than finding good information about my topic. This becomes increasingly detrimental to writing a good essay within the alloted time because I would often come to find that several of my "sources" were absolute tripe, which in turn would force me to go searching, in a far more hectic matter, for new, good sources. I now find that when I am looking through a source I read them more thoroughly, and notice who the author was and for what purpose they wrote the article in question. I have found that the resources I acquire are far better than with previous essays. The topic that I chose for this essay is the effect living environment, such as a small town versus a larger city, has on political views.

Recently, I have been checking the sources for credibility. Also I have been reading deeper into the information provided. Digging deeper into the source allows me to discover relevant information that I may have before missed. I feel that I am better prepared to write an essay with valid resources. This will come in handy when I am in college and need to have credible resources to back my research. My topic is skin cancer prevention.

I am glad to see the use of the word "tripe" (Tyler P.) along with your previously assigned Swedish names. More seriously, I am glad that many of you have decided to use Inspire for your research!
